What are the main attractions of Sopot?
Lying between historic Gdansk and industrial Gdynia, Sopot is considered the entertainment centre of the Tricity. Sopot – what attractions does the city have to offer?
One of the most popular places in Sopot is the so-called Monciak, a 600-metre-long promenade, where you will find plenty of restaurants, pubs, clubs, cafes and shops. You can buy souvenirs of Sopot here and, if you are lucky, you will also meet Polish music stars. Strolling along Monciak, you will eventually come across the Crooked House, a characteristic building designed by architects Szotyńscy and Zaleski inspired by Jan Szancer’s drawings. The Village of Joy portal placed the Crooked House at number one on its list of the world’s 50 strangest buildings. Inside you will find, among other things, the “Wall of Fame” with autographs of celebrities visiting Sopot.
Walking along the famous Sopot promenade, you will reach the longest pier on the Baltic Sea, the John Paul II Sopot Pier, which is about 0.5 km long. Not far from the pier is the famous Grand Hotel, opened in 1927, where among others Marlene Dietrich, Jan Kiepura, Greta Garbo, Fidel Castro, Adolf Hitler and Charles de Gaulle, stayed.
Sopot is one of the many places in the world where you can find a monument to Wojtek the Teddy Bear, who was taken in by the 22nd Artillery Supply Company in General Anders’ army during the Second World War. Sopot’s Wojtek sits on the escarpment by St George’s Church and is dressed in the summer uniform of the 2nd Polish Corps. While strolling around Sopot, it is also worth paying attention to other monuments – Adam Mickiewicz, Frederic Chopin, John Paul II or Czesław Bulczyński (Parasolnik).
Among the most famous places in Sopot is also the Forest Opera, where great musical events are held. The opera house is open to the public every day from 10:00 to 15:00 (admission is free), and during your visit there you can stand on the legendary Sopot stage.
