What is worth seeing in Toruń?
Poland’s gingerbread capital has been attracting tourists from all over the world for years. Toruń offers unique attractions that will appeal to lovers of astronomy, sweet treats and exceptional monuments. Since 1997, Toruń’s monuments have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, visitors appreciate the Old and New Town with its 13th-century urban layout as well as the Teutonic Castle. Toruń’s most famous monuments are excellent examples of Gothic architecture. These include the medieval churches of Toruń, the Old Town Hall, St George’s Brotherhood Court, castles, fortified walls and numerous patrician and burgher houses.
Quite popular among visitors are the ruins of Toruń castles. The Teutonic Commanders’ Castle dates back to the 13th century and lies on the right bank of the Vistula River, while the Dybów Castle, which was the seat of the royal aldermen, was built in the 15th century and is located on the left bank of the city.
During a tour of Toruń, it is also worth visiting places associated with Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born here in 1473. In the city of the famous astronomer, you will find, among others, Copernicus House, Nicolaus Copernicus University, the Copernicus Monument on the Old Town Market Square and the Planetarium. Another symbol of Toruń is gingerbread – you can learn about the tradition of making these delicacies in the Live Gingerbread Museum.
Toruń’s greatest attractions are inextricably linked with the UNESCO World Heritage List. In addition to the Teutonic Knights’ Castle, it includes sites located in the Old and New Towns, including the Old Town Square, where you will find the mediaeval Old Town Hall, the neo-Renaissance Artus Court, the 18th-century Church of the Holy Spirit, the neo-Gothic building of the Central Post Office and the Meissner Palace from 1739. Tourists are also enthralled by the 19th century Fortress of Toruń, consisting of over 150 structures, including 15 forts.
